What Is Garnet?

Garnet gemstones are part of the isometric crystal system and have a specific gravity of 3.5 to 4.3. They rank anywhere from 6.5 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale. While some garnet stones are softer than others, it’s still a good idea to be careful with your garnet gemstones and protect them from wear and tear when you can.

The chemical composition of garnet depends on individual stones, and garnet’s refractive index ranges from 1.780 to 1.889. Garnet has a vitreous luster and glassy appearance (similar to clear quartz).

While you might think of garnet as a dark red gemstone, they come in a range of colors, including red, pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, grey, black, and brown. Color change garnets display a different color depending on the light you view them in and can change from yellow, green, or brown shades into pinks or purples.

Garnet crystals have been found across the globe with deposits located in Tanzania, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Czech Republic, Russia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Australia, India, China, and the United States.

There are several different types of garnet gemstones you can choose to explore. Here are some of them:

  • Demantoid garnet: demantoid garnets are a striking green variety of andradite garnet and come in shades from olive green to vibrant emerald.
  • Mali garnet: Named for the country they’re found in, these garnets often come in greenish-yellow shades and were only recently discovered in 1994.
  • Mozambique garnet: As their name suggests, you can find Mozambique garnets in the African nation of the same name. These deposits produce high-quality red gemstones.
  • Tsavorite garnet: Mined in East Africa, tsavorite garnets are stunning green garnets. These gemstones are rare, and it’s difficult to find any larger than four carats.

Garnet Throughout History

An ancient Egyptian tomb

Garnets have featured in the historical record since ancient times. According to Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian’s “The Book of Stones: Who They Are and What They Teach,” the word garnet derives from the Latin word “granatum,” meaning pomegranate, no doubt alluding to the resemblance to the fruit’s seeds.

Ancient Egyptian tombs have revealed necklaces in burial chambers made with garnet gemstones. Romans used them in trade, and carved them into rings they could use to stamp wax seals on documents. Even the Aztecs used these glittering gems to adorn objects.

Jewelers in Scandinavia and half a world away in Asia created Garnet bracelets and other jewelry for wealthy elites. In the area now known as the Czech Republic, Garnet deposits spurred the development of a gem cutting industry that has flourished ever since.

Garnet gemstones experienced a dip in popularity around 1820 but enjoyed another resurgence in popularity in the years following the Industrial Revolution.

Healing Properties of Garnet and Its Different Forms

Garnets are known as powerful gemstones for love and relationships, able to assist you in drawing more love into your life for yourself and others. They also move stagnant energy in your chakra system, especially in your root chakra and lower triangle (your root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras), helping you feel powerful and confident.

Each variety of garnet comes with its own remarkable set of metaphysical properties and can help you invite more prosperity into your life, protect and clear your energy field, or stimulate your creativity like never before.

Here are a few ways you can explore this natural wonder’s variety of colors and healing powers.

Red Garnets

When you think of garnets, chances are it’s one of these red beauties that comes to your mind’s eye. If you’re interested in using garnet to draw love into your life or help you experience a more blissful relationship with yourself, make a point to explore these sacred stones.

Almandine Garnet

Simmons and Ahsian credit almandine garnets with invigorating the root chakra and stirring the kundalini energy stored at the base of your spine, helping you feel more grounded. You can use the healing properties of this garnet to clear blockages and open up your root chakra, giving you a boost of energy and allowing you to feel a greater sense of security, fewer worries, and more joy.

Pyrope Garnets

Judy Hall shares in her book “The Crystal Bible,” how garnet’s healing properties can encourage you to open your heart and invite more love into your life. Pyrope garnet’s healing properties are said to help you develop more charm and charisma. Make a point to use this gemstone when meeting new people or to rekindle the vitality in a current relationship. Try slipping a garnet bracelet on your wrist before a date night for a little extra confidence.

Rhodolite Garnets

This red variety of garnet works with your first, fourth, and seventh chakras, bringing them into balance and harmonizing your energy. By balancing these energy centers, you’ll notice a deeper connection to your higher self and your intuition. When you’re not sure which direction to go in your life or what the next step is, use rhodolite to link up with your inner compass.

Green Uvarovite Garnet

Like many green gemstones, uvarovite garnet is excellent at helping you invite prosperity into your life. If you feel as though there’s never enough money to go around, uvarovite can assist in developing a more abundance-oriented mindset.

Uvarovite’s ability to help you develop a different way of thinking about things in your life isn’t isolated to the financial realm. Anywhere you feel lacking in something, be it self-esteem, love, or happiness, this gemstone can help you free your mind from those thoughts and show you there’s another way of looking at things.

Perhaps, you’ve just started a new business and you’re not sure how you’re going to scale or stay competitive in the marketplace. Let this green garnet’s healing properties help you let go of the stress and anxiety, and move into a more relaxed way of being. Sometimes just by letting go of something, we can attract the very thing we’re after in life.

Lapis lazuli, pyrite, tiger’s eye, and jade are other healing crystals you can use to welcome all forms of prosperity into your world.

Orange Spessartine and Hessonite Garnet

If you feel as though things are stagnant in your life and you’re not moving forward in the way you’d like, make a point to add spessartine (also called spessartite garnet) into your gemstone collection. Simmons and Ahsian share how this healing crystal stimulates your first, second, and third chakras, giving you confidence, unleashing creativity, and stirring your sexual energy.

Another helpful gemstone you can pair with spessartine is hessonite. According to Hall, hessonite helps you release any feelings of guilt and inferiority (issues that originate in the lower chakras). It also emboldens you in seeking out new challenges, perfect for when you want to shake things up and get the energy moving in your life.

With an influx of fresh energy in these chakras, you can expect a boost of motivation and more stamina in bringing your ideas to fruition. Whether you have a gardening project you want to tackle or you’re ready to go back to school to advance your career, you can create the self-assuredness to pull through.

Spessartine and hessonite encourage you to expand and move past your comfort zone. So, if you’ve been hesitating to try something new, use the metaphysical properties of these  gemstones to give yourself the nudge you need.

Other chakra stones you can use to support your lower triangle include carnelian, sunstone, and jasper.

Black Andradite Garnet

Black andradite garnets connect to the root chakra, helping you move the energy here and bringing a sense of grounding to your being. It’s essential to keep your chakras balanced, so if your intuition is guiding you to this stone, trust it.

You can use this variety of garnet as a protection stone because it forms a defensive barrier around your aura, helping ward off negative energy. Andradite is also useful for ridding yourself of disempowering or self-sabotaging thoughts, allowing you to replace them with something positive and uplifting.

If you need extra help letting go of outdated thinking patterns, using aquamarine can make the process easier. Black tourmaline or black obsidian will also give your energy field an added layer of protection if you need it.

Melanite garnet is another form of andradite. It can sometimes be black or dark red and also makes an excellent protection stone.

Grossular Garnet

When you’re up against a challenge, Hall notes that grossular garnets can help you relax and go with the flow of life instead of against it, bringing a sense of calm and ease. With a more composed state of mind, you can move through difficult situations without as much stress and may find a solution to problems quicker than you expect.

Or maybe you’re managing a big project at work or organizing an event in your local neighborhood, and you need it to go as smoothly as possible. Grossular garnets can foster cooperative energy, ensuring fewer hiccups and a more successful outcome.

Consider using blue lace agate with grossular garnet to further support a calm and mellow attitude.
