What is Rutilated Quartz?
A bold combination of Quartz and yellow Rutile makes this stone quite unique. Together, these materials form the Rutilated Quartz. It is a form of Clear Quartz, essentially. As any crystal lover will note, Clear Quartz is a rock crystal known as the “Master Healer.” Its ice-like feature has been cherished and believed to be connected to the Divine for centuries.
Rutilated Quartz is dressed in golden yellow “needles” or hair-like growths throughout the Quartz. These golden strands are the Rutile, a titanium dioxide mineral that has large quantities of iron oxide.
If the content of iron oxide is quite high, the crystal may have red and great quantities of gold throughout. If the content of iron oxide is low, the strands can have a much darker appearance. These darker strands look like straw or hay and have been called by such names.
If the color is quite golden in the Rutile, this crystal looks like it has strands of hair. This is why this stone is sometimes referred to as “angel hair” in various languages. It can be curly, frizzy, or straight “hair.” It can also appear to form stars or crosses, spread parallel or diagonally, or be very packed or have sparse “hairs.” The options you’ll find in this unique stone are endless. Find a look that speaks to you on a deeper level!
As for specifications, Quartz is about a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it perfect for jewelry. The Rutile inside, however, is about a 6 on the hardness scale. Luckily, it is protected inside the Quartz, so you can enjoy the delicate beauty safe inside the harder Quartz crystal.
Rutile comes from the Latin terms “Rutilus” which means red. When the material was studied, its primary color was deep red.
History of the Rutilated Quartz Crystal
While Quartz itself has a long-standing history as being a powerful healing tool, much revered by ancient civilizations, Rutilated Quartz has a more complicated history than that. For a long time, Rutilated Quartz was thrown away by sorters and miners. Most people only wanted stones with refined looks and anything “mixed” would be tossed aside. They wanted pure Quartz, not with the “swirls” inside!
It wasn’t until the 1950s or so that gem collectors began to take notice of this special Quartz. And so it finally found a place among the crystals we know and love today. The quirky quartz is mined wherever Crystal Quartz is mined — which is all over the world. You’ll often find it in Australia, India, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan, and the US.
